Spinal Decompression for Sciatica Treatment

Written By Taschler Spine & Rehab on December 10, 2018

Did you know it’s been estimated that as many as 10% of people who have low back pain actually have a condition called “sciatica?”

In most people with sciatica — about 90% — the condition is caused by the compression of nerves due to a herniated disc in the spine.

Back pain is not the only symptom of sciatica. Others can include:

  • Radiating pain in one or both legs
  • Pain that radiates to the feet or toes
  • Sensation of numbness in the legs or feet
  • Pain upon raising one’s legs

These symptoms are variable — you can have none, one, or all of them at any given time. In addition, they range in intensity depending on the nature and position of the damaged disc.

Chiropractic Offers a Noninvasive Sciatica Treatment

Fortunately, you don’t have to resort the prescription medications or invasive surgeries to find relief from your sciatic pain.

Chiropractors are skilled in resolving problems of the neck and spine, including sciatica. For most people, relief can be found through gentle, safe chiropractic manipulation.

This simple technique allows your chiropractor to move the structures of the spine back into their proper places for pain relief and proper functioning.

Sometimes, though, patients with sciatica will need a more intensive treatment. That’s where spinal decompression comes in.

Spinal decompression is a safe, effective way of applying traction  to your spine to help reposition the herniated disc by encouraging negative intradiscal pressure.

This lowered disc pressure can help bring a nurturing supply of nutrients to the injured disc. This will help relieve inflammation and encourage healing.

Since compressed nerves contribute to 90% of sciatica cases, decompressing the spinal structures helps remove the pressure from the nerve to soothe local irritation and inflammation.

Spinal decompression is accomplished using an FDA-approved traction table that has a movable bottom and a fixed top.

The doctor will put a special harness around your hips, and the lower part of the table will be lowered and raised in a series of movements while your upper body remains still.

This will gently decompress the area between discs, relieving nerve pressure.
