Posture and Its Role in Back Pain

Written By Taschler Spine & Rehab on August 1, 2018

Back in the day, children were given a book to put on their heads to train themselves to walk with good posture — head up, shoulders back, spine long. Turns out, that’s pretty good advice.

Studies show that poor posture has a direct correlation to back pain. And today’s population has more postural challenges than people in the past.

The advent of modern technology, with its overabundance of technical gadgetry and screen-viewing entertainment, has caused a plethora of postural ills — and coordinating pain syndromes.

How Chiropractic Can Improve Posture for Back Pain Relief

There is much you can do to improve posture on your own. You can “walk tall” with your shoulders straight and your head centered above your spine. When sitting, you can have good back (lumbar) support and keep your feet flat on the floor, making sure not to sit for too long.

You can use lumbar and cervical pillows to help position your spine correctly during sleep. But many of us have suffered from poor posture so long that we need some extra help.

Using spinal manipulation and other therapies, your chiropractor can gently ease out-of-place vertebrae back into place to return your spine to its natural position.

This repositioning of spinal structures will help correct “slouchiness” and make it easier to keep and maintain a correct posture. In return, this correction can resolve the back pain associated with poor posture.
