Car accidents can be extremely frightening, and it can be difficult to know if you have been injured until later. Conditions like whiplash can present themselves days after the initial accident, which may prevent you from visiting your chiropractor at Taschler Spine and Rehab right away. Read on to discover the top 5 signs that you may have whiplash after a car accident.

Neck Stiffness

A stiff or tight neck can be one of the first signs of whiplash. Accidents can place excessive strain on the neck vertebrae, causing inflammation and pain. Check to see if it is painful to move your neck in any direction - front, back, or side. If you cannot move your neck at all, you should see your chiropractor as soon as possible.

Chronic headaches can also be an indicator of whiplash. Many patients that suffer from whiplash are also suffering from a concussion, another injury that needs to be treated quickly. You may also experience dizziness, insomnia, irritability, and nausea.

Ringing in the Ears

If you’re hearing a persistent ringing in your ears after a car accident, make sure you seek treatment immediately. Also known as tinnitus, ringing in the ears could be announcing the presence of nerve or brain damage.

Tingling or Numbness

Whiplash can damage areas of your cervical spine, which can also translate to impaired sections of the central nervous system. Nerve damage can present itself as numbness or tingling, similar to the feeling of pins and needles when one of your limbs falls asleep.

Difficulty Chewing

Whiplash can damage the sensitive neck areas, leading to pain that manifests in the jaw and face. If it hurts to speak, chew, yawn, or open your mouth wider than usual, you may have suffered a whiplash-related jaw injury. Talk to your chiropractor as soon as possible to determine the cause of your jaw pain. =
